Born
in Chicago, Illinois to
Greek immigrants Alexander and Maria Papoutsis,
Peter was baptized and raised in the Greek Orthodox Church.
In
1994, Peter and his late mother went on a pilgrimage to the
Holy
Church
of the
Virgin Mary on the island of Tinos, Greece and to the Holy
Lands.
It
was there that Peter learned about the Greek Old Testament, traditionally
called
the
Septuagint. Peter learned that the Septuagint was the Bible
that
Jesus Christ, his Holy Apostles, and the early
church read and that the Orthodox Church has continued to use
this version
of the Old Testament exclusively since the
time of Christ.
Upon returning to America, Peter sought
to obtain an English version of the Septuagint to
read.
To his
surprise he could not find any English translations of the
Septuagint that were properly translated or based on accepted
Orthodox biblical
and
liturgical
materials.
Therefore, Peter began to learn Septuagint Greek so that he
could read the Septuagint for himself without initially intending
to translate
it for others. However, during that time, he discovered that
he
had translated a substantial portion of the Septuagint and
decided to make a formal translation for his church and others.
Seven years and countless sleepless nights later, he completed The
Holy Orthodox Bible, Volume I, The Pentateuch Translated from
the Septuagint.
Peter is formally educated and trained as an attorney and is
knowledgeable about ancient history and cultures, especially
Greek, Roman and
Middle-Eastern societies. Peter currently resides
outside Chicago with his wife Valerie.
